Neurotrophins

Exploring the Structure

Neurotrophins must be stable in the environment outside of cells. To help with this stability, all four neurotrophins have an unusual collection of three disulfide bridges that glue each chain into its folded conformation. Two neurotrophins are shown here: nerve growth factor on the left, from PDB entry 1bet, and neurotrophin-4 on the right, from PDB entry 1b98. As you examine these proteins yourself, notice that both ends of the chain are immobilized by these disulfide linkages.

These images were created with RasMol. You can explore the structure by clicking on the accession codes here and picking one of the options under View Structure. Note that you need to use the biological unit file for entry 1bet--the crystallographic file only contains one of the two chains.

A list of Neurotrophin related entries in the PDB as determined by a FASTA search on July 27, 2005 is available here. For more information on neurotrophins, click here.
